A new documentary series is set to take fans behind the scenes of one of pop music’s most iconic eras—and it includes insight from members of *NSYNC. Executive produced by Joey Fatone, Boy Band Confidential will explore the untold realities of the boy band boom that dominated the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Premiering April 13 and 14 from 9–11 p.m. ET/PT on Investigation Discovery and streaming on HBO Max, the series features raw, unfiltered interviews with some of the biggest names of the era. Participants include fellow *NSYNC member Lance Bass; AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys; Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees; Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men; Ashley Parker Angel of O-Town; and Brad Fischetti of LFO, among others. Through candid conversations, the project aims to uncover the pressures, exploitation, and challenges that often came with global fame at a young age, while also highlighting stories of financial manipulation, addiction, and the emotional toll behind the scenes.
“Being in a boy band was one of the greatest experiences of my life – but it also came with challenges we didn’t always understand at the time. This project gave all of us a chance to reflect, to be honest, and to share what really happened behind the spotlight,” said Fatone.
“Boy Band Confidential goes beyond nostalgia. It’s an honest, unfiltered look at a cultural phenomenon that shaped an entire generation. With Joey Fatone bringing together a who’s who of artists from the era’s most iconic boy bands, we’re illuminating the pressures, vulnerabilities, and surprising realities of life at the height of pop stardom with a level of access rarely achieved in music documentaries,” added Jason Sarlanis, President of ID.
In addition to the artists themselves, the series also features interviews with managers, industry insiders, and those closest to the performers—offering deeper insight into the power structures and behind-the-scenes dynamics that shaped the boy band phenomenon.
While it’s currently unclear if Justin Timberlake appears in the series, Boy Band Confidential still offers a meaningful look into the world that helped launch *NSYNC into global superstardom—and ultimately shaped the careers of its members.
The trailer, released this week, teases a powerful and emotional deep dive into the highs and lows of boy band fame, featuring firsthand accounts from artists who lived it.
Fans can tune in to Boy Band Confidential when it premieres April 13 and 14 at 9/8c.
