Wonder Wheel is a 2017 American period drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. Set in the 1950s against the backdrop of Coney Island’s amusement parks, the film follows Ginny Rannell, an unhappy former actress working as a waitress, and her husband Humpty, a carousel operator struggling with alcoholism. Their lives become increasingly complicated when Humpty’s estranged daughter Carolina returns home while hiding from her gangster husband. Justin Timberlake stars as Mickey Rubin, a Coney Island lifeguard and aspiring playwright who becomes romantically involved with both Ginny and Carolina, while also serving as the film’s narrator. Kate Winslet, Jim Belushi, and Juno Temple also star.
SYNOPSIS
Set in 1950s Coney Island, Wonder Wheel follows Ginny Rannell, an unhappy former actress who works as a waitress while living with her husband Humpty, a carousel operator and recovering alcoholic. Their troubled life is disrupted when Humpty’s estranged daughter Carolina returns home seeking protection from her gangster husband and hoping to rebuild her life. Meanwhile, Ginny begins an affair with Mickey Rubin, a Coney Island lifeguard and aspiring playwright who narrates the story and becomes drawn to Carolina after meeting her. As Mickey’s feelings for Carolina grow, Ginny becomes increasingly jealous and insecure, while Carolina finds herself caught between her desire for a fresh start and the dangers of her past. The complicated relationships between the three become increasingly tense as Mickey struggles with his feelings and Carolina’s presence threatens to disrupt the fragile balance of the Rannell household.
