Trouble with the Curve is a 2012 American sports drama film directed by Robert Lorenz and written by Randy Brown. The film stars Clint Eastwood as Gus Lobel, an aging Atlanta Braves baseball scout whose traditional approach to scouting is increasingly challenged by the changing game. When Gus’s failing eyesight threatens his ability to evaluate a promising young player, his estranged daughter Mickey, played by Amy Adams, joins him on a scouting trip and begins to reconnect with her father. Justin Timberlake co-stars as Johnny “The Flame” Flanagan, a former baseball player Gus once scouted who is now a scout for the Boston Red Sox and develops a close relationship with Mickey. John Goodman, Matthew Lillard, and Robert Patrick also star.
SYNOPSIS
Aging Atlanta Braves scout Gus Lobel is struggling to prove that his traditional approach to baseball still has a place in a game increasingly influenced by statistics and advanced analytics. When Gus is assigned to evaluate highly touted high school prospect Bo Gentry, his daughter Mickey reluctantly joins him after his boss becomes concerned about his failing eyesight. As Gus and Mickey work together to assess Gentry, they discover a weakness that other scouts have overlooked. Along the way, Mickey reconnects with Johnny “The Flame” Flanagan, a former baseball player who shares her love of the game, and the two begin to grow closer. Meanwhile, Gus’s concerns about Gentry put him at odds with Braves executives who believe statistical analysis tells a different story, forcing Gus and Mickey to stand behind their evaluation of the young prospect.
