Black Snake Moan is a 2006 American drama film written and directed by Craig Brewer, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci, and Justin Timberlake. Set in rural Tennessee and steeped in the blues tradition, the film follows Lazarus Redd, a deeply religious former blues guitarist who takes in Rae Doole, a troubled young woman he finds abandoned by the side of the road. Justin Timberlake stars as Ronnie Morgan, Rae’s boyfriend, a National Guard soldier who returns home after being discharged due to severe anxiety and sets out to find her. The film’s title is derived from the 1927 Blind Lemon Jefferson blues song of the same name.
SYNOPSIS
Lazarus Redd is a deeply religious farmer and former blues guitarist who discovers Rae Doole beaten and abandoned by the side of the road. After bringing her home and nursing her back to health, Lazarus becomes determined to help her overcome her self-destructive behavior, eventually chaining her to a radiator to prevent her from leaving. As Rae begins to confront the trauma behind her troubled life, an unexpected bond develops between them. Meanwhile, Rae’s boyfriend, Ronnie Morgan, returns home after being discharged from the National Guard due to severe anxiety and begins searching for her. When Ronnie finally discovers Rae at Lazarus’ home, a confrontation forces them to confront the complicated circumstances that have kept them apart.
