Justin Timberlake – ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ Album 20th Anniversary

Celebrating 20 Years of FutureSex/LoveSounds!

Twenty years ago today, Justin Timberlake released FutureSex/LoveSounds, his groundbreaking second solo studio album. Originally released internationally on September 8, 2006, the album arrived in the United Kingdom and France on September 11, followed by its release in the United States and Canada on September 12. Blending pop, R&B, funk and electronic influences with Timbaland’s futuristic production, FutureSex/LoveSounds ushered in a bold new era for Justin and became one of the defining albums of the 2000s. From “SexyBack” and “My Love” to “What Goes Around… Comes Around” and “LoveStoned / I Think She Knows,” the album delivered a string of unforgettable hits that helped redefine the sound of mainstream pop. 🎶

I still remember purchasing my copy of FutureSex/LoveSounds from Best Buy on Tuesday, September 12, 2006—the day the album was released in the United States. I specifically wanted that edition because it included the bonus track “Pose” featuring Snoop Dogg, which was also included on the UK and Japanese editions of the album. I’ve always loved FutureSex/LoveSounds from start to finish—it’s truly a no-skips album for me. “SexyBack” was absolutely incredible and completely blew my mind the first time I heard it, while “My Love” and “LoveStoned” remain two of my personal favorites. Twenty years later, it’s still special to look back on that release day and remember experiencing this incredible era as it was happening. 🎧💿

In addition to the standard album tracks and regional bonus material, FutureSex/LoveSounds also featured the rare, R&B track “Boutique In Heaven,” which originally served as the exclusive iTunes Store pre-order bonus track for the album. The track remains one of the lesser-known recordings from the FutureSex/LoveSounds era and offers another glimpse into the diverse range of music Justin created during this period. ❤

Twenty years later, FutureSex/LoveSounds remains one of Justin Timberlake’s most influential and celebrated albums. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went on to achieve multi-platinum success, while its innovative production, visual identity and genre-blending sound helped establish Justin as one of the leading artists of his generation. The album’s singles—including “SexyBack,” “My Love” featuring T.I., “What Goes Around… Comes Around,” “Summer Love,” and “LoveStoned” (also known as “LoveStoned / I Think She Knows”)—became defining moments of the era, while collaborations with Timbaland, T.I., Three 6 Mafia, Will.I.Am, Snoop Dogg and others helped make the project even more memorable. 🎵

Justin himself marked the milestone on social media, sharing images and a video from the FutureSex/LoveSounds era with the simple caption, “Life changing. THANK YOU”—a fitting reflection on an album that changed the course of his career and left a lasting impact on pop music.

The celebration has also made its way to Justin’s official website, which has been updated with a special FutureSex/LoveSounds 20th-anniversary theme and a sign-up form promising fans “News, exclusives, and first access to what’s ahead from Justin Timberlake.” It certainly feels like the perfect time to revisit this unforgettable era and see what else may be ahead.

Twenty years later, FutureSex/LoveSounds still sounds as bold, exciting and forward-thinking as it did in 2006. For longtime fans, it’s an album filled with memories; for a new generation, it remains a landmark record that helped shape modern pop and R&B. Here’s to 20 years of FutureSex/LoveSounds! 🎉
